#NYFW: DISTORTED REALITY IN THOM BROWNE SS2017

THOM BROWNE SS2017 is a wonderland of contradictions, and surprises.
Inspired by the fun, poolside parties of the 60's and 70's, the color palette and pattern choices are bright,  psychedelic, and wild.
However, the models themselves,  are rather reserved, unemotional, and robotic, completely contradicting the "fun" pool party vibe.

THE ROBES

The show starts by the models coming out in brightly colored robes, hair caps and handbags.
They then quickly reveal an entirely different collection beneath their robes.

 SUITS MUTATION

Thom Browne who is famous for his tailored suits, has mutated the concept into a modern wet suit. Playing around with dimensions he has mimicked the impression of a 2 dimensional outfit while confusing the eye as it is worn by a 3 dimensional model.

The models then unzip their dresses to reveal the final surprise.

PATRIOTIC SWIMWEAR

The finale consists of models undressing and then sitting "poolside" in rather patriotic swimwear.
Could this entire collection of "fun" pool party vibes be masking some political thoughts?

LADY LIBERTY?

Throughout the show, there was one model who was elegantly dressed in a subdued silver gown, resembling the Statue of Liberty and reminding me of a costume Elton John once wore.
Could she be the reference to the Statue of Liberty?
As an icon of freedom and  the welcoming site to past immigrants, the Statue of Liberty signifies many important American symbols. Such references would mean a hidden deeper meaning to this entire collection.

Just my thoughts,

#NYFW: POLITICS and PRABAL GURUNG SS2017

PRABAL GURUNG's SS2017 Collection, sings a powerful tune of politics, and the importance of your vote.
As an avid supporter of Hilary Clinton, Gurung's collection is bursting with feminist energy, and the empowerment of women.
Subtle messages of hope, change and controversy, are carefully accented and intertwined throughout his entire collection.

"Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all."

-Emily Dickinson

ISAIAH 58:1 KJV
"Cry aloud; Do not hold back; Lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

"They threw things at me then but they were not roses."

-Susan B. Anthony

Undeniably, a serious undertone can be felt within his entire collection.
Largely focusing around a rather "Democratic" color palette, he showcases the ability for a woman to embrace their softness and femininity while working in harmony with a more powerful side.

Carefully choosing to end his collection with 3 pant suits, he opted out of an elaborate gown finale. Like a powerful walk into the future of Spring 2017, women are empowered and history will be made.

VOTE!

#NYFW: I SEE MONDRIAN BUT IT'S ACTUALLY PROENZA SCHOULER SS2017

"What we do is so much about feeling in the moment."
-Lazaro Hernandez

"Color, energy, technology. It's all of those things, and then it's crafts and artisanal construction."
"It's about creativity and pushing fashion and the motion."
-Jack McCollough

PROENZA SCHOULER SS2017 by Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, is undeniably channeling the paintings of Piet Mondrian. Whether it was by accident or intentional, the abstract qualities of asymmetrical balance and use of simplified color vocabulary is iconically Mondrian.

Composition II in Red, Blue, and Yellow, 1930
Piet Mondrian

Dutch Painter, Piet Mondrian was a writer and theorist, who believed that art expressed the spiritual side of nature. He intentionally simplified his paintings into the basic elements, in order to reveal the energy and universal powers of nature.
The use of his vertical and horizontal lines embodied  the positive and negative that exist in everything.

In PROENZA SCHOULER SS2017, it showed common links with Piet Mondrian and the artists of the De Stijl. They used the artistic style of tradition, while implementing the  power of complete abstraction.
This type of vision in modern art allow transcendence of divisions in cultures. It creates a common language through the purity of primary colors, flatness in form, and dynamic tension.

Timeless. Simplified. Unified.
This is the direction of modern times.

#NYFW: MARC JACOBS SS 2017

Marc Jacobs SS 2017 rave themed collection, was a whimsical display of youth and dreams. Taking place in Midtown's Hammerstein Ballroom, the colorful collection resembled the vibe of  CareBears with a twist of high fashion
From rainbow thigh high socks, patch work jackets, and youthful minnie skirts, the clothes were nostalgically reminiscent of the child within all of us.

Setting the scene with floating lights, and midnight blue backdrops, one can almost imagine being transported to a dream-land, full of innocence and dreams.
It is hard to believe such a youthful, sweet collection would be plagued with so much controversy, but nevertheless it was. The colorful dreadlocks worn by all the models, caused a media uproar and hard accusations of cultural appropriation.

Marc Jacob's Creative Director responded to the accusation with the following statement:

"All who claim "cultural appropriation" or whatever nonsense about any race of skin color wearing their hair in a particular style or manner - funny how you don't criticize women of color for straightening their hair. I respect and am inspired by people and how they look. I don't see color or race- I see people.
I'm sorry to read so many people are so narrow minded... Love is the answer.
Appreciation of all and inspiration from anywhere is a beautiful thing. Think about it."

#NYFW: LOVE IT OR HATE IT? (KANYE WEST "YEEZY" SEASON 4 COLLECTION)

"I wanted to make pieces that can be timeless." "Pieces that you can pick out in a vintage store in 20 years and say, " Wow, I'm happy to have this."
-Kanye West , VOGUE

Kanye West's 'Yeezy' Season 4, was showcased on Roosevelt Island, featuring an army of models that were casted via twitter. Attracting nearly 10,000 responses, a requirement for strictly "multi-racial" models, led to a careful planned controversy, that created just the right amount of buzz leading up to his show.

The Yeezy Show, was a rather disorganized mess and the blistering heat did not help anyone. Models were wilting one by one, streaming sweat, and fogging up their clear vinyl thigh high boots. Viewers of the show could not help but feel an uncomfortable wave of absurdity. Are the models okay? How long would this last? Why are we here and how is this part of fashion week?
Unfortunately, all the social media in the world could not spice up this rather bland collection inspired by "Calabasas". The pieces were redundant from his last collection and rather basic, in structure and form. Resembling undergarments like spanx, one should never spend so much money to look so under dressed.

The whole situation reminded me of the childrens' story, The Emperor's New Clothes, where two swindler's convince an Emperor of creating the smartest outfit out of special thread that only intelligent people could see. Of course, the whole spectacle was a lie, but only the innocence of a small child could break the silence of absurdity.

Unfortunately, no such child existed on this day, and the Kardashian maufia, were spotted all over social media and fashion week, wearing Yeezy's spanx and spreading a regrettable new trend.

BEST COLLECTION OF #NYFW: LOUIS VERDAD SS2017

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK REVIEW

MOST IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION: LOUIS VERDAD 2017

Louis Verdad is a Mexican-American designer who was discovered by Madonna's stylist Arianne Phillips, back in 2000.
At the 2003 MTV music awards, Madonna wore a black cashmere suit set designed by VERDAD, and shared a controversial kiss with Britney Spears. The moment was photographed and shared all over the world, catapulting his career into instant celebrity success.
However, the immediate success was plagued with controversy and conflict, and the business ballooned at an uncontrollable rate. Claiming bankruptcy in 2007,  and later losing temporary custody of his own brand name, his precious designs have been quietly resting in the closets of his own private clients.

Now returning to the limelight, for his first presentation at NYFW, his debut collection is targeting a younger, "urban, sophisticated" woman. Following the cues of European luxury houses, he has strongly pushed the return of classic denim.
The Spring 2017 Collections is filled with denim chic, patch-work embellishments, whimsical patterns, and obi belts. The look is innovated, easy, cool, chic, and charming.
His style, cut, and form is uniquely VERDAD, and a designer everyone should know. A true gem of NYFW and a delight to view.
By far, TALKFASHION's top pick for NYFW.

On September 9, 2016 CLUB MONACO staged its first ever NYFW presentation at Vanderbilt Hall, Grand Central Terminal.

Shearling coats, Victorian florals, ruffles, velvet, and structured military jackets are a few of the basic Fall themes found in this collection.
The entire presentation was a chic, effortless display of the classy, cool style of a New Yorker. Never trying too hard or over done, CLUB MONACO style is always relaxed, cool, and affordable.
Falling under the new trend of "see now, shop now", the entire collection is already available in stores.

Love this wool sweater!

#NYFW: J-LOREN 2016 "HER"

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK REVIEW:

J-LOREN is a brand created by Harriette Thomas and Jason Scott. Their line is geared toward dressing the woman of the night. Between the hours of 6pm to 6 am they have declared their motto as, "We run the night".
Their style aesthetic is undeniably bold, sexy, raw, and animalistic. The tailoring and cut is formed to celebrate the woman's form and embrace the animal within.

"HER"

"HER", is the newest collection of J-LOREN 2016. Unlike, the traditional route of presenting SS 2017, many designers this year have adopted a new trend of showcasing current collections that can be purchased immediately.
"HER" is is an amazonian goddess, in search for her own power, and control. She hunts and kills the crocodile who is the king of the land, by seducing and then conquering. To show her world her victory she wears his skin as a triumphant trophy, and ominous warning. Her message, "Be from their inner source. Be and become". A cryptic slogan of inner power, domination, and  the personal struggle for survival.

#NYFW: KATIE GALLAGHER SS 2017

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK REVIEW:

KATIE GALLAGHER is a New York based designer who has been featured in Vogue, The Cut, Nylon, Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Refinery 29 and the Fashion Times. Her designs are mysterious, whimsical, powerful, feminine and refined.

ECLIPSE

ECLIPSE is the 15th collection of Katie Gallagher, and the third installment of her all-black series. It is inspired by the sensual side of darkness grabbing inspiration from the black out of a total eclipse.

HARRY CLARKE ILLUSTRATIONS

Subtle references of intricate textures, and fragile geometric details, play homage to her obsession
with the illustrations of Harry Clarke.

GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE
The ECLIPSE collection is filled with sheer elements that showcase the lines of the female form and the patterns of delicately sewn lace elements. Mimicking the mysterious elements of beauty and power, her collection is highly reminiscent of gothic churches.

SS2017 collection features subtle elements of dots, hearts, crosses, silver zippers, ribbons, and twisted seams.

Even with all the absence of colors, her collection cleverly plays with the subtle bounce of light and varying shades of black.

FASHION BLOGGING AT #NYFW

For any fashion lover, the opportunity to be invited to New York Fashion Week, is some what of a dream. There is a mysterious glamour to the world of fashion, intertwining itself with celebrities, power, beauty, and self expression.

As a fashion blogger at NYFW, the experience is what you make of it. If you just want to wear a pretty dress, take some photos, and give a rather vapid statement about "liking" a collection you know nothing about, then your contribution to the fashion world is rather meaningless.
However, if you want to take full advantage of your coveted NYFW pass, you must consider your 3 main responsibilities.

1.) DO YOUR RESEARCH
Before attending the selected shows, do your research. Know what your designer is about, and their style aesthetic. See past collections of what they have done and build your knowledge of what they are about. This will help you understand their collection better and if you are given an opportunity to speak to the designer you actually have valid topics to discuss.

2.) TAKE INTERESTING PHOTOS
One of the hardest things about being a fashion blogger at NYFW, is the ability to juggle the job of writer and photographer. You have one shot and thats it.You are responsible for finding interesting content, and equally intriguing photographs, simultaneously. Other challenges lie in bad camera angles, unflattering lighting, and timing. Be sure to stay calm and search for interesting moments in the show.

3.) IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS
Be sure to check out each look in its' entirety. Meaning, hair, makeup, nails, and accessories. Many times it is in these details that the most interesting fashion ideas are found.

Stay tuned for more NYFW reviews!
