FASHION DIARY: 9 DAYS, 9 OUTFITS (January 2018)

FASHION DIARY
JANUARY 2018

Dear Diary,

With the the glitz of Christmas and New Years having past, January has quietly snuck up on me. With its watchful eyes, and silent judgement, I find myself in resolution for massive changes. This is the year to change.
Believing in the watchful eyes of 2019, procrastination finds me agitated...

Today I find myself enveloped in darkness. Black. Such an attraction. I find it rather amusing how the color black flirts with the absorption of light.
Playfully encouraged, I find myself uplifted by its opposite. Ironic. love it...

Can I live in a  Chagall Painting? No feet. No boundaries. Limitless love.
Light as a feather, slightly delusional, but euphorically happy. Colors bursting with new ideas and dreaming of the impossible.
Don't control me, I am going to fly...

Frozen in the midst of winter, my heart is blossoming.
Could it be Spring so early? Still winter, and yet, I hear gentle melodies by chirping birds....

Feeling tropical today. Wearing cobalt blue and imagining the sea. chose a crop top and feeling chilly. Note to self, it's still winter...

Happiness.
Life is good.. for now.
Learning to grab the moments as they come.
POP!
Like bursting bubbles, watch out, they are fragile.

White Tiger.
There is so much strength and beauty found in the electric combination of black and white.
Forcing myself today to not depend on color, but to work with textures, and shapes...

Mopsy Maya.
Wearing my favorite cardigan, with enough absorption to mop the floor. I feel enchanted and unable to concentrate.
Do I have super powers or am I dreaming?

Officially Spring in/on my head.
Took a walk in my day dreams, and rather enjoyed it.

How was your January, friend?

Maya

How To Style Your Outfit Around Your Bathing Suit

Learning how to style your bathing suit into your daily look, is a fabulous way to enjoy the final stretch of the Summer season!
Very similar to Superman and his super suit, bathing suit style will allow you to be ready for water, anytime, anywhere.

Whenever we think of swimwear with fashion, the furthest our mind may take us is a colorful sarong, a beach dress, or some sort of cover up.
However, what about the idea of including a bathing suit as part of your fashion look?

Here are my top 4 tips on styling a look around your bathing suit:

Tip 1: Dress Light

Nothing is worse than wearing a bathing suit under another outfit on a hot day. When you style a look like this, pick the lightest fabrics, and let the suit peak through.
The more airflow around your body, the easier it will be to stay cool.

Tip 2: Do not wear expensive or sentimental jewelry.
Never forget the purpose of wearing a swimsuit, is to spontaneously swim or jump into a body of water. This bracelet by Betsey Johnson is one of my favorite pieces of costume jewelry and a nice compliment to the pink swimsuit.
In general, keep jewelry as limited as possible.

Tip 3: Pick a Color Palette Around Your Bathing Suit:

Rather than covering your bathing suit, think about featuring it.
My style inspiration for this look, was completely inspired by the vibrant orchid pink found in my suit. Because, the color is full of energy, I counter balanced the effect by pairing it with a neutral white lace dress, and white vintage bag. I tied a silk Pink Pucci scarf in reference to the color palette.

Tip 4: Have fun and enjoy life!

WHAT I WORE: Versailles

My style is entirely inspired by the grandeur, romance, whimsy, and mystique of Versailles. There is no place in the world that ignites my soul, and imagination, quite like Chateau de Versailles.

By borrowing from the old world, and mixing with the new, I feel my style is timelessly eclectic.

WHAT I WORE:

The choker is by CHINE, and made of silk, faux fur, and vintage ornaments. It is quite similar to the chokers worn by Marie Antoinette and add a unique texture of glamour that is something quite different from a modern day necklace.

The cardigan is by MOSCHINO and a vintage treasure! As soon as I found this turquoise delight I knew it belonged to me. Like roses bursting in the wind, it shares an air of whimsy that leaves me imagining leaves dancing along the winds of Versailles.

My coat is created by one of my favorite Scandinavian brands, Noa Noa. I bought it several years ago in Antwerp and fell in love with it largely for the color, and delicate turquoise embroidery.

There is something about the color palette of burgundy and turquoise that excites my eyes. It is unpredictable and yet pleasing.
To my surprise, the color duo is found all over the Versailles interiors.

My dress is by BCBG and is turquoise wrap dress adorned with short silk sleeves. The burgundy turtleneck is by Zara and a basic winter essential.

The boots are by Kenneth Cole and the softest, most comfortable boots I own.

My gloves are simple vintage velvet in a red toned burgundy.

3 Ways Picking Your Clothes is Like Picking Your Friends

Lets take a moment to think about clothes not simply as material possessions or things we wear, but as actual life choices we make during various stages of our life. In many ways it is a relationship. Your style is never stagnant but a growing process of finding where you belong and who you are. As your life changes, your preferences and views will change. Fashion is the subconscious language of how we  relate to the world on an artistic level.

The following are 3 Ways Fashion is Like Picking Your Friends.

1.) Comfort Zone.
We all have that level of "comfort" found in people that are quite similar to the way we think and live. This we know, but believe it or not we take a similar process when picking the clothes we choose to dress ourselves.
It is a mutual understanding of "safety" and reliability. This is where we feel safe, but with consequence, it does hinder your abilities to step out of the box. Such safety nets can cause barriers on your ability to try or find something new about yourself.
Ever since we are kids, there is a genre or stereotype that we are casted in or perhaps cast ourselves as. Quite a select style, this is where we feel comfortable and it becomes habit. Shopping in the same stores, and gravitating to the usual brands, taking risk is nearly impossible. You see yourself as one way, and brand yourself as such.  You are clones of your clique, and thinking has now become routine. So safely in your perfect outfit, but so dangerously suffocating in your narrow mindset.
Take a second to step away from who you think you are, and let yourself expand to the person you are meant to be.

2.) Friend or Foe?
Fashion like relationships is a love hate relationship. It's funny how at certain moments of your life, week, or day, you may love a certain look and think it is a good idea. Then, you awake from your momentary loss of sanity and realize, you are not friends at all. In fact, the fashion piece you thought you loved, is making you look like an idiot. We all have those ridiculous items in our closet that can only be marked by a "What was I thinking?" moment. However, just the same, it is one of those unavoidable experiences that serve only as a lesson learned.

3.) Time Changes Things.
As I look back on my fashion history, and the evolution it has made, I find it interesting how I can distinguish specific segments in my style, and how it connected to my life experiences. It's like the friends you have as a kid, and the friends you have as adults are in many ways different, but innately similar. There is always a small core line of identity that does not completely, ever change.
For example, growing up as the youngest girl of two boys, I was quite a tomboy during my teens. I loved soccer, swimming, tennis, etc. and my style represented that. Living by the ocean, my style was casual, relaxed, and easy. Then I moved to NYC, and my entire style shifted to all black and white, linear lines,  and contemporary styles. When I moved to Germany, I wore bold bright colors, and took a rather artistic approach to my style. Near France and Belgium, my style became ultra feminine and more floral and and abundance of pastel.

Throughout all my changes in life and fashion, there has always been a formula or style  DNA that never seems to change. This has taught me how we are capable of adopting many styles and genres throughout a lifetime, but the one's that stick are the one's closest to our genetic code. Just like friends, the memory and experiences spent with those people are never wasted, or forgotten. They shape the person you are today, just as your fashion choices in the past, shape your styling abilities of today.
With that said, don't be afraid to take chances, and try something scary and new. Open your eyes to what could be, and take a breather from what you know. Mistakes are lessons to be learned, and without them you learn little. Trial and error is all part of the process in discovering who you are.

Take care,

xo,
Maya

Daniel Wellington Photo Shoot: Part 1 of 2

Now a days, time is a suffocating matter. With every tick of the clock, it is one second less to the obligations, deadlines, and responsibilities we hold in this world. Seconds are all perfectly in sync with all our electronic devices, and no moment  seems to be our own.

This is why I particularly love my Daniel Wellington watch, 'Classy Sheffield' . I know it is ironic to show love for a watch when I detest the monotony of time itself. However, this watch is unique in the sense that there are no numbers and in replacement, are the most beautiful, glistening, Swarovski crystals. Every time I check the hour, my eyes are rewarded with a soft sparkle of optimism, and a cheerful fleck of light. Time is no longer dissected into seconds, but an estimation within each 5 minute mark. Flexibility is now existent in our life and time management contains freedom.
Not knowing the exact minute and second of the day allows me a breather from the natural push of our competitive world, and a break from the control it holds.

Daniel Wellington has offered the readers at Talk Fashion a personalized discount code: MayaTalksFashion
It will provide all readers of Talk Fashion a 15% discount which will expire on March 15, 2015. https://www.danielwellington.com/global/

Like a chameleon, the watch blends, and compliments all my various characters, and styles. In this 2 part photo shoot, I will display how it seamlessly adds a touch of splendor to almost any look, from edgy, casual, to glamorous.

                               Girl at FASHION WEEK

This look is perfect for Fashion week. It is a perfect accessory to jump from show to show, and it adds a bit of masculinity that compliments a timeless biker jacket. Currently, I am loving the mixing of harsh and soft textures, and have chosen to wear a ivory chiffon blouse that ties in a rather sweet bow.

                                     CASUAL SUNDAY

Cashmere, cashmere, and cashmere! Relaxing weekends do not have to be a mixture of jersey and baggy T-shirts. The true luxuries of life are found  in cashmere. With that said, you will often find me on the weekends in a simple cashmere sweater, white jeggings, and ballerina flats. Accessories are minimal and easy. The watch blends effortless, while adding just the right touch of sophistication. A look that appears far more impressive than it really is.

                                    ARTSY GLAMOUR

A look  that is channeling a crumble of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and a pinch of Karl Lagerfeld, this is a fun, artsy way, to accessorize with a watch in a glamorous way. It is elegant, unusual, and interesting for the eye to spot a circular shape on the wrist.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of DW photo shoot featured tomorrow on Talk Fashion.

My CHANEL Style

The French fashion house of Chanel is famously known for revolutionizing the art of haute couture and everyday fashion "prêt-à-porter". The fashion house disregarded structured-silhouettes, corsets and bodices, and replaced them with garments that were functional and flattering to the curves of a woman’s silhouette. Iconically known for their tweed jackets, little black dress, and masterful use of the classic black and white, Chanel is the maestro of balancing the classics while maintaining the forward thinking of the modern woman.

My personal love for Chanel is found in their classic black and white elements, mixed with pearl embellishments. I was recently invited to try a collection of Chanel pieces, and my favorites land me always with the the classic black and white style. Chanel couture always has a level of elegance, sophistication, and power. Coco Chanel herself, was a powerful, independent, business woman, revolutionizing the male dominated fashion world in her iconic, "tweed jacket".
There is something about Chanel style,  that allows you to remain feminine, while embracing the power within every woman.

Fashion Challenge Day 14: OOTD "Parisian Black and White"

Fashion Challenge Day 14, is my love for wearing classic black and white with a quirky French twist. The colors, black and white are known for it's classic and orthodox qualities, but easily can be styled stiff, safe, and predictable.
Today's look is highly influenced by leading French designers who use the classic black and white colors and playfully style their looks with various frills, textures, patterns, and ribbons.
The skirt is from France, and one of my favorite black and white skirts. The textured patterns of black circles, is a fun way to play with shapes, linear stripes, and braids. The entire look is playful, fun, and quirky, while still remaining classic.

Fashion Challenge Day 13: OOTD "Ugly Duckling"

Today's look is inspired by one of my favorite children's book, "The Ugly Duckling". The "duckling" which is a baby swan, is made fun of by other barn animals, and labeled as ugly. Growing up he is frustrated with the label of "ugly" and yearns for the day to become "beautiful". In the end, the duckling grows into a beautiful swan and all pain is forgotten and happily ever after is achieved.

However, I find the moral of the story a bit twisted, and I am here today to question the term ugly and beauty as interchangeable. After all, everything is subjective to preference, and sometimes what you perceive as ugly is simply your own inability to find the beauty that lies hidden.  Beauty can always be found within ugly and waiting for transformation, handicaps one to find those unexpected discoveries. A baby swan may not be as majestic and regal as a full grown swan but there is beauty in its own unexpected way.

My look celebrates the signature grey tones found in a baby swan, mixed with various textures of lace, knits, and fur to get an effect of a cocoon type layering.
